  1. The CHIMERA  Device

CHIMERA is a multidetector operating at LNS since the new millennium in its complete 4pi configuration. It consists of 1192 detection units each one consisting of a Silicon first stage detector, followed by CsI(Tl) crystal coupled to a photodiode as second stage. The different identification methods adopted in CHIMERA (DeltaE-E , Time of flight, Pulse Shape Discrimination) allow a complete detection of the charged particles emitted in nuclear collisions. Moreover in the CsI(Tl) crystals it is possible to detect and identify, even if with low efficiency, neutrons and gamma-rays.

  1. The Physics

The high performances of Chimera permit to investigate different aspects of heavy ion nuclear collisions at intermediate energy. The experiments involve both stable and exotic beam produced by in flight fragmentation (FRIBS@LNS). Below are reported some example. Study of the isospin and mass dependence of reaction mechanisms at Fermi energies. Time scale in multifragmentation reactions . Studies on the isospin dependence of the asymmetry term of nuclear equation of state both at low (LNS) and at high nuclear density (GSI-Darmstadt). Study of population and decay of nuclei and resonances at the border of the drip lines, searching for exotic decay and cluster structures.

  1. FARCOS Correlator

Is under construction the FARCOS correlator (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) devoted to the correlations study, femtoscopy and spectroscopy and related applications. FARCOS is a compact and relatively small-solid angle detection system, characterized by both high angular and energy resolution and modularity. In its complete configuration FARCOS will consist of 20 modules, each one having 132 detection channels.

  1. The GET electronics

Due to the very high detection channels and compactness envisaged for both CHIMERA and FARCOS, the use of standard Front-End electronics is not allowed. For this reasons the signals will be read and digitized using the GET electronics. This kind of digital electronics will be firstly implemented for the readout of CSI(Tl) of CHIMERA. Subsequently, it will be extended to FARCOS array and, finally, to the CHIMERA silicon detectors.
